Botijo de Oro 3

$1,200.00

A “botijo” is a traditional vessel for keeping water cool, used for millennia in Spain. In this series of artistic pieces, Micol reflects on the significance of objects as symbols in our lives. As time marches ever forward, objects that were once essential for life become obsolete, yet forms themselves can retain a deep emotional significance even once stripped of their utility.

All of Micol’s botijos are purposefully and aggressively rendered useless by punching holes in the pieces. We do not need botijos to keep our water cool in the 21st century, but the forms still perform an essential function in our modern world: they remind us where we came from.

Some botijos feature blue accents and flower decals to emphasize the decorative purpose of the object. Others feature eye-catching gold details and decals of plastic bottle images, as a subtle criticism of the alluring yet disposable nature of present-day capitalism.
